ABOUT THE DISEASE
Granuloma annulare is a chronic skin condition where raised, reddish or skin-colored bumps arranged in ring patterns, develop usually on hands and feet. It most often affects children and young adults but can occur at any age.
SYMPTOMS
- • One or more rings of small, firm bumps (papules) over the backs of the forearms, hands, or feet
- • Itching in the skin lesions
CAUSES
The cause is unknown. But in some people, the condition may be triggered by:
- Animal or insect bites
- Infections, including hepatitis
- Tuberculin skin tests
- Vaccinations
- Sun exposure
- Minor injury to the skin
DIAGNOSIS
- Physical Evaluation
- Skin Biopsy
TREATMENT METHODS
In most cases, no treatment is necessary for granuloma annulare. Most lesions disappear within a few months, and rarely last more than two years. If needed, treatment options include:-
• Corticosteroid creams or ointments
• Corticosteroid injections
• Freezing the lesions with liquid nitrogen
• Ultraviolet Light therapy
• Oral medications, like antibiotics, immunosuppressants
